Pure spa & wellness atmosphere in a historical bathhouse

Karlbad owes its special charm to over 300 years of spa tradition. Almost in awe, people switch off their mobile phones – sockets or power connections are not in sight here. In the eight generation George Aschbacher and his son Hans-Jörg operate this cultural-historical gem. Time seems to stand still here; when entering the 500-year old farmers’ bathhouse hectic and everyday life stress is suddenly forgotten. The old Kärntner bathhouse is considered one of the last of its kind in the Eastern Alps region.

What are guests awaited by in Bad Kleinkirchheim’s oldest spa & wellness facility?
After father and son have heated the boilers and the warm water in the wooden tubs guarantees seductive relaxation moments, the Aschbacher family call on people to come “Booooodn!“. But before the guest of the house’s seven rooms and other visitors can enjoy this unique bathing experience, some preparation is required: Hours before, high-quality mineral stones must be heated. Bath attendant George subsequently stacks them in layers of six together with wood and lights fire. After over two hours, the red-hot stones are put into tubs with ice-cold, radonic spring water. The soothing spa therapy, that was cultured as early as in the 17th and 18th centuries, can finally begin.

The Karlbad lies at the Nockalmstraße that over 35 kilometres in gentle turns leads up the Nockberge. The Karlbad is not only an ideal day-trip destination for spa fans – also Kärnten’s traditional food attracts both hikers and connoisseurs to the Karlbad.

Health tip: A spa therapy in the Karlbad helps to prevent or ease gout and rheumatism.
