BIOSPHERE PARK NOCKBERGE
Charinthia´s mountains offer unique nature and cultural landscapes
The Nockberge Mountains have been listed by UNESCO as Biosphere Park since 2013. The local population since then has dedicated even more time to maintaining and preserving this representative and unique nature and culture landscape. The most important goals hereby are
- to preserve the region’s original character in the best possible way
- to protect wild life and flora including the various habitats
- to allow visitors to enjoy an impressive nature experience
As one of Austria’s oldest mountain regions, the Nockberge Mountains biosphere park is home to an almost infinite variety of animals and plants. Hikers are thus likely to encounter chamois and groundhogs, discover old pine trees or pick up the unique Speik, the alpine lavender scent here and there. In addition to that, a valuable cultural treasure in the form of lived traditions and customs has been preserved over the centuries to this day. Whether alpine cattle drive, historical bathhouse or traditional mill – Kärnten knows how to surprise and inspire its guests.
